Sir Nicholas Soames (* 12. February 1948 in Croydon , Surrey ) is a British politician of the Conservative Party .

Life

His father was the British Conservative politician Baron Christopher Soames and his mother was the British politician Lady Mary Soames , daughter of Winston Churchill . His brother is the entrepreneur Rupert Soames . He attended Eton College and studied at Mons Officer Cadet School in Aldershot . From 1967 to 1975 he was a member of the British Army . As an officer, he was stable master of Charles, Prince of Wales from 1970 to 1972 .

Since the British general election in 1983 he sat for 36 years for the Conservative Party in the House of Commons as an MP. From 1992 to 1994 he was Parliamentary Secretary of State in the Department of Agriculture and from 1994 to 1997 Secretary of State in the UK Department of Defense in the cabinet of John Major . He is a member of the Privy Council .

Before the EU membership referendum in the UK in 2016 , he spoke out against Brexit , but supported him in all votes in the House of Commons after the close victory of the Brexiteers. However, he insisted on the conclusion of a Brexit agreement with the EU in order to ensure a regular exit of the United Kingdom. On September 4, 2019, after his parliamentary decision in the House of Commons to vote with the opposition for the first time to prevent an exit without an agreement, he was expelled from the Conservative Party group together with 20 other MPs on instructions from Boris Johnson . He is no longer a member of the House of Commons elected in December 2019.

Soames was married to Catherine Weatherall from 1981 to 1988 and has been married to Serena Smith since 1993 and has three children.
