The Ochsenweide, Schafhauser Wald and Feuchtwiesen near Esens are a nature reserve in the Lower Saxony municipalities of Dunum , Holtgast , Moorweg and Stedesdorf, as well as the town of Esens in the municipality of Esens in the Wittmund district .

General

The nature reserve with the sign NSG WE 109 is about 298  hectares . It encompasses the approximately 214 hectare FFH area of ​​the same name . In the nature reserve of the former nature reserve "are Ochsenweide " and parts of the protected landscape areas "Leegmoor" which, risen in the southwest, and "Benser depth", which follows in the southeast on the nature reserve. The area has been under nature protection since February 1, 2019. The competent lower nature conservation authority is the district of Wittmund.

The nature reserve is located southwest of Esens. It consists of the sub-areas “Ochsenweide” (approx. 144 hectares), “Schafhauser Wald” (approx. 109 hectares) and “Wet meadows near Esens” (approx. 43 hectares), all three of which are connected to one another and thus form a biotope network .

The nature reserve is traversed by the Benser Tief in the area of ​​the ox pasture or bordered by it to the south. In addition, the low limits the nature reserve in the north in the area of ​​the Schafhauser Wald to the west. The ox pasture is crossed in the east by a public road and bordered by another public road. In the northeast, the Schafhausen Forest partially borders the local area of ​​Esens. In the east, the state road 8 runs between the Schafhauser Wald and the wet meadows near Esens.

Ox pasture and wet meadows are partially drained through ditches leading to Hartgaster Tief, Stuhlleide and Nettelburger Leide.

Ox pasture

The ox pasture is a superficially peated high moor area that has been renatured through rewetting measures . At the edge of the raised bog there are transition and low bog areas . The area is bounded in the south by the Benser Tief, which flows through the ox pasture and divides it into two areas.

The area to the east of the Benser Tief is characterized by raised bogs with moorland and swamps . In the area to the west of the Benser Tief area, moor and swamp forests, as well as swamp shrubbery made of birch and willow, as well as small-scale pipeline meadows and reeds predominate. Extensively used grassland and reed beds on fens adjoin the core area of ​​the ox pasture to the west . To the east marsh, close to the Ochsenweide transition and fens with swamps, breakage and swamp forests and wet pasture. Both areas are parts of compensation areas that were not previously part of the “Ochsenweide” nature reserve. In the area of ​​the ox pasture, small bodies of water can be found in places that have emerged from peat cutting.

In its core area (which corresponds to the former “Ochsenweide” nature reserve), the ox pasture accommodates various peat mosses , bell heather , cranberries , round-leaved sundew , medium sundew , narrow-leaved cotton grass , white beaked reed , swamp soft orchids and medium water hose . Well-developed Bult-Schlenken complexes are present in this area . The area is home to the amphibian moor frog and pond newt . Furthermore, it is the habitat of various dragonflies such as peat mosaic damsel , late adonis dragonfly , bat aurora , little rush damsel , black darter and great moss damsel, as well as various locusts such as the short-winged swordfish and short-winged bite insect . The edge areas of the moor are habitat for great gray shrike and stonechat .

The transitional marshes are home to various peat mosses as well as peat bush , swamp soft orchis, swamp blood-eye , moor lily , common pennywort , fever clover , rosemary heather , beak sedge , thread sedge and medium water hose.

The bog and swamp forests are dominated by downy birch . There are also English oak , buckthorn , mountain ash and bush willows. Various peat moss, narrow-leaved cottongrass, beaked sedge, swamp blood-eye, common pennywort, reed and reed grass settle in the herbaceous layer of the forests .

Schafhauser Forest

The Schafhauser Wald extends north of the ox pasture. Parts of the forest are part of the nature reserve. Beech and oak forests in particular grow here . The beech forests are partially formed as grove beech forests . In the forests, common beech and common oak are the dominant tree species. The herbaceous layer of the oak forests is made up of wiryweed , whistle grass , thorny worm fern , broad-leaved thorn fern , bracken , wood sorrel and golden maidenhair moss . Red beech and hornbeam dominate the hornbeam beech forests . Pedunculate oak and holly also join . In the herb layer, ivy , broad-leaved thorn fern, thorny worm fern, wood sorrel, wreath and lady's hair moss settle . In places, coniferous wood stocks are also included in the nature reserve. In the transition area to the ox pasture, moor forests predominate. The Schafhauser Wald has a high proportion of old and dead wood . The forest is managed by the Lower Saxony State Forests , taking into account the program for long-term ecological forest development (LÖWE). Parts of the Schafhausen Forest are subject to natural forest development as part of the NWE-10 program of the Lower Saxony State Forests.

The sheep Hauser forest is habitat of bats Noctule , Brandt's bat , whiskered bat , Serotine , Pipistrelle , Daubenton's bat , Natterer's bat and brown long-eared . An old bunker in the north of the nature reserve serves as winter quarters for some of the bat species. The forest is also home to sparrowhawks and wrynecks .

Wet meadows near Esens

The wet meadows near Esens connect to the south-east of the “Schafhauser Wald” area. The grasslands of different degrees of humidity lie on drained and partly discarded bog soils. Borst grass lawns and marsh grass meadows are interspersed in it, in places there are also reeds and woody plants with willow-swamp bushes and deciduous forests.

On the Nardus grasslands settle Hasensegge , Hirsesegge , Carex Pilulifera , sheep fescue , three teeth , Kopfige woodrush , Devil's , bloodroot , dog violets and creeping , the moor grass meadows accommodate English thistle , Greenish Gelbsegge , Hirsesegge, Marsh Cinquefoil, three teeth, Eriophorum angustifolium, Common pennywort, tangle rush , Kopfige woodrush , Swamp hair strand , tormentil and pipe grass.

The wet meadows are the habitat for short-winged sword insects and brown-spotted mother-of-pearl butterflies as well as various meadow birds , including lapwing , common snipe , meadow pipit and skylark . Curlew , ruff and Montagu's Harrier use the area as a feeding habitat. Reeds are living space and a. for the reed warbler .
