Nick James (film critic)

Nick James (born before 1970) is a British film critic , writer and curator .

James studied at St. Martin's School of Art and was a singer in various rock bands from the late 1970s to the mid-1980s. He began writing about films for the British magazine City Limits in 1989 and became head of the film department there in 1991. Since 1997 he has been editor of the film magazine Sight & Sound , which was awarded the Telluride Film Festival Silver Medallion in 2011 . His articles have appeared in The Guardian , The Observer , The Independent , Vogue , London Review of Books and The Literary Review , among others .

In 2002 James published his book Heat for the Michael Mann film of the same name . In 2010 he was awarded the title of Knight des Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French Ministry of Culture . Since 2012 he has curated the British Film Institute's "Deep Focus" film series at BFI Southbank, which takes place twice a year . On February 2, 2016 it was announced that Nick James had been appointed to the international jury of the Berlin International Film Festival 2016 .
