history

Nickelfrei.de was created in 2009 from a private initiative by the portal operator Stephanie Benn, who is an allergy sufferer herself. The “Information portal for nickel allergy sufferers” was finally implemented with the aim of providing comprehensive information on the topic of nickel allergy and actively taking action against the often incorrect use of the term “nickel-free” by the industry. This has been online since February 12, 2009 under the domain www.nickelfrei.de . For the third year of existence, the site was redesigned in spring 2012 and renamed "Health Portal".

Content

Nickelfrei.de offers those seeking advice and those interested a comprehensive range of information about triggers, symptoms , diagnosis and therapy of nickel allergy . Current findings from research and practice flow into the editorial reporting as well as topic-related innovations in health policy. The dissemination of information takes place primarily in the form of online articles. In addition, new cooking and baking recipes for the low-nickel preparation of sweet and savory dishes are published monthly in cooperation with the author and allergy consultant Roswitha Stracke. The portal also acts as a lobby group and contact person for those affected by allergies. In addition to a serious educational work, Nickelfrei.de tries to improve the understanding of the problems of nickel allergy sufferers in society. In the forum, users can exchange ideas with fellow sufferers or get free advice from expert experts.

background

Nickel allergy is by far the most common contact sensitization. Around 65 million people across Europe suffer from allergic reactions to nickel contact, in Germany it is currently around 11 percent of the population (approx. 9 million people), with women being affected significantly more often than men (4 to 5%) with up to 20 percent. A nickel allergy is an allergic defense reaction of the body that can occur as a result of direct skin contact ( contact allergy ) as well as after consumption of foods containing nickel ( food allergy ) . Even small amounts of nickel are sufficient to cause inflammatory changes in the skin complexion (itching, redness, eczema ) in allergy sufferers . Nickel is contained in numerous everyday objects such as jewelry, coins, closures, cookware, prostheses, paints and cosmetics, but also numerous foods. The diagnosis of a nickel allergy usually means a significant reduction in their quality of life for those affected. A cure is not possible.

When the “Action Plan Against Allergies” came into force in 2007, initiated by the Federal Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection (BMELV), politicians have recently reacted to the epidemic extent of the allergy problem. In the foreword of the action program, Federal Minister Ilse Aigner (CDU) calls for people with allergies and their families not to be left alone with their problems. The aim of the national action plan is therefore to improve the quality of life for allergy sufferers and to facilitate access to reliable information on all things allergies. Nickelfrei.de acts in accordance with this health policy objective.
