Nickols Island

Nickols Island is a striking rocky island with a steep coast off the Ingrid Christensen coast of the East Antarctic Princess Elisabeth Land . It is located 24 km west-northwest of Mount Caroline Mikkelsen in the Sandefjord Ice Bay .

Norwegian cartographers used aerial photographs of the Lars Christensen expedition in 1936/37 for mapping purposes. They named it Instøy . Scientists from the Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions visited it between January and February 1969. The Antarctic Names Committee of Australia named it in 1968 after electrical engineer Alan H. F. Nickols, who was involved in the exploration of the Amery Ice Shelf in 1968 .
