The Sandefjord Ice Bay is a 40 km wide bay on the Ingrid Christensen Coast of the East Antarctic Princess Elisabeth country . It forms the head end of Prydz Bay . The bay is bounded by the Amery Ice Shelf in the west, the Publications Ice Shelf to the east and the mainland shore in the south.
The Norwegian captain Klarius Mikkelsen (* 1887) discovered them in February 1935 during his voyage with the whaling ship Thorshavn on behalf of the whaling entrepreneur Lars Christensen . Mikkelsen and Christensen named the bay Sandefjordbukta after the town of Sandefjord , the stronghold of the Norwegian whaling industry. The name has since been expanded to avoid confusion with Sandefjord Bay on the coast of Coronation Island in the archipelago of the South Orkney Islands .
