Nico Henri Frijda (born May 1, 1927 in Amsterdam , Netherlands ; † April 11, 2015 there ) was a Dutch psychologist , author and professor at the University of Amsterdam . His work The Emotions , published in 1986, is considered a standard work in psychology.

Life

Frijda was the youngest of the three children of Professor of Law and Politics Herman Frijda and his wife Dora Hermance Charlotte. With his two older siblings, his brother Leo Herman and his sister Jetta Sandra. Nico Frijda grew up in Amsterdam, where his father taught at the University of Amsterdam.

During the German occupation of the Netherlands in World War II, Nico Frijda went into hiding in Friesland . The letters he wrote during this period were published after the end of the Second World War under the title Post uit Friesland ( Post from Friesland ). His father and older brother were murdered by the Nazis . Frijda's father was initially banned from working, arrested in 1944, taken to Westerbork transit camp , then deported to Auschwitz , where he was murdered that same year. His older brother Leo Herman Frijda fought during the German occupation in the Dutch resistance group CS-6 founded in 1940 and was executed near Bloemendaal in 1943 .

Frijda studied psychology at the University of Amsterdam where he in 1956 with the dissertation Het begrijpen van Gelaatsexpressies ( The understanding of facial expressions ) doctorate was. In 1965 he was appointed full professor of psychology at the same university. In 1992 he retired. The following year he was appointed a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . He died on April 11, 2015 in his native Amsterdam.

Private

Nico Frijda was first married to the actress Nelly Wiegel, who became known as Nelly Frijda . The couple had a daughter and two sons. After the marriage ended in divorce in 1975, Frijda married a second time. From this marriage a son was born.
