from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Nicolae Neacșu (* 1924 in Clejani , Giurgiu district ; † September 3, 2002 ibid) was a Romanian violinist. He belonged to the Roma ethnic minority and led the band " Taraf de Haïdouks ", with which he became internationally successful around 1990 and gained special recognition for his improvisational technique.

Neacșu was born in Clejani in Wallachia, not far from Bucharest, known for its numerous Roma musicians ( Lăutari ) , and learned to play the violin at an early age. He lived in poverty for most of his life and played with various bands at weddings and other local events. In the 1980s the Bucharest musicologist Speranta Radulescu became aware of his talent and together with her Swiss colleague Laurent Aubert made recordings of Neacșu, which were published in France in 1988 under the title "Roumanie: Musique Des Tsiganes De Valachie".
