Nicolae Puiu (businessman)

Nicolae Puiu (* 1946 or 1947 ; † May 18, 2011 in Iași ) was a Romanian businessman and football functional .

Career

Before the Romanian revolution in 1989, Puiu had made money through business in Iraq and Libya , allegedly he smuggled money worth two million US dollars in Revulsin drug packs into Romania. With the money generated there, he supported FC Oneşti in the 1990s , which he also led as president for a time. He was temporarily banned from the Federația Română de Fotbal for a year because he wanted to illegally poach a player from Astra Ploiesti . In 1998 the club rose to Divizia A , the top division of Romania. He is said to have influenced referees for the club, but he himself accused other officials of corruption.

After relegation in 2000, a group of investors took over the club a year later and deposed Puiu as president. Later he tried unsuccessfully to acquire the club, which had run into financial difficulties and which ultimately had to stop playing in 2004. He gambled away a large part of his money in gambling and, according to his own statements, received a pension of 1,600 lei .

After the diabetic Puiu fell into a coma a week earlier, he died of a heart attack in May 2011 at the age of 64 .
