The house Nicolaiplatz 2 is a listed building in Wernigerode in the Harz district in Saxony-Anhalt . It houses the Wernigerode district commissioner, which is subordinate to the Ministry of the Interior and Sport of the State of Saxony-Anhalt.

Architecture and history

It is a building complex from the 19th century that was built after the town fire in 1851. The three-storey main building was built in the classical style with functional, simple half-timbering. The windows on the ground floor could be closed by shutters. On the roof there are a few dormers and two ornamental gables that point to Nicolaiplatz, on which the Nicolaikirche was located until 1873, which was demolished due to dilapidation.

The building was erected on the site of the former Nicolai Hospital, which was destroyed in the city fire and whose history dates back far into the Middle Ages, as a functional building for the St. Nicolai & St. Salvatoris Hospital and as a widow's house and has been used by the police since 1952.

The Nicolai Hospital was also called St. Nicolai Hospital, it was mentioned in a document as early as 1245 as the Nicolai Hospital. During the reign of Count Christian Ernst zu Stolberg-Wernigerode and his wife Countess Sophie Charlotte born. From Leningen-Westerburg the St. Nicolaihospital received extensive support from the Stolberg-Wernigerode family , who at that time were inclined to pietism based on the Halle model.

In the local register of monuments , the house is listed as a monument under registration number 094 03 235.
