Nicolas Formé (born April 26, 1567 in Paris ; † May 27, 1638 ibid) was a French tenor and composer .

Life

His musical and singing talent was noticed early on. He was probably trained at the Notre-Dame de Paris choir school. Formé was therefore accepted into the Sainte-Chapelle in 1587, but had to leave it again after a short time because his lifestyle (drunkenness and the refusal to live together with his confratres, instead he lived with his maitresses in his own house) the Aroused disapproval from those responsible.

Because of his indisputable musical abilities and influential advocates, he was reassigned to the royal chapel in 1592. Here he could consolidate his position. King Louis XIII In 1626 he helped him to return to the Sainte-Chapelle as a canon, where he worked under the protection of the king until his death despite repeated adversities.

Little is known of his compositional work, as he did not take care of the printing during his lifetime. The king took the manuscripts into his personal safekeeping, but after his death most of them were lost. In the few surviving works, Formé also shows something extraordinary as a composer. He pioneered the classical form of the French motet , in which choral movements and solo parts alternate. In the only mass he received , he created a musical style in which he juxtaposed the choir with a group of vocal soloists, similar to the Concerto grosso , which was created later .
