Nicolaus Ludwig Esmarch (born April 1, 1654 in Klixbüll , † May 6, 1719 in Herzhorn ) was a German poet and Protestant theologian.

Life

The son of pastor Johannes Esmarch († 1666) lost his father at an early age. Together with his brothers, Johann Detlef, who also became a pastor, and the later doctor Hinrich Christian, he was sent to the Latin school in Flensburg. In 1671 he began studying theology at the University of Kiel , which he continued at the University of Wittenberg . After completing his studies, he went to Copenhagen in 1679 , where he initially worked as a tutor. There he met Ulrik Fredrik Gyldenløve , who recommended him as pastor in Herzhorn. Thereupon Esmarch took up this church office in 1682 and administered it until the end of his life.

Besides occasional poems for funerals, weddings, etc., Esmarch's sacred poems and epigrams are known. He published these collected works in 1707 in Glückstadt and Leipzig under the titles Sion (volume for sacred lyric poetry) and Helion (volume for secular poetry). Stylistically, he moves with his works, according to the time between the Baroque and the Age of Enlightenment .
