Nicoletta (singer)
Nicoletta (* 11 April 1944 in Thonon-les-Bains as Nicole Fernande Grisoni ) is a French Chanson singer . She celebrated her greatest successes in the late 1960s and early 1970s with songs such as La musique (1967), Il est mort le soleil (1968), Ma vie c'est un manège (1969), Mamy Blue (1971), and Fio Maravilla (1973) and Glory alléluia (1974).
Career
Nicole Grisoni studied at the Art Academy in Lyon. Later she went to Paris to work as a DJ. At the same time, she also worked on her own songs and music productions. In 1966 appeared under the stage name Nicoletta her debut single entitled L'homme à la moto . This was the beginning of the long-term collaboration with Barclay Records , one of the most influential French record companies at the time. Nicoletta made her breakthrough in French show business a year later with the single La musique . An even greater success followed in 1968 with Il est mort le soleil . Ray Charles recorded the song in the same year for his album A Portrait of Ray in an English version ( The Sun Died ). Jazz and soul greats like Betty Carter , Gene Chandler and Shirley Horn recorded versions for their part.
In 1969 Nicoletta sang the title song of the same name for the film Jeff with Alain Delon . Almost at the same time she had another top hit with Ma vie c'est un manège , the success of which was surpassed by Mamy Blue in 1971 (originally by Joel Daydé). This chanson is heavily influenced by gospel, a style of music to which Nicoletta devoted herself repeatedly over the course of her career. The accompanying album Visages , recorded with the rock group Zoo, includes songs by Leo Ferré ( Dieu est nègre ), Julien Clerc ( La promeneuse ) and Gilbert Bécaud ( La solitude ça n'existe pas ). The LP Nicoletta 73 (1973), which contains a French adaptation of Jorge Ben's Fio Maravilla , was also a great success . This song was as big a hit as the French version of The Battle Hymn of the Republic , Glory alléluia , released the following year .
In the following years, Nicoletta's singles appeared regularly, with À quoi sert de vivre libre? (1976; French version of I Can't Give You Anything But My Love ) or Broadway (1978), like many of her colleagues, she devoted herself to disco music, which was popular at the time. At the end of the 1970s, her collaboration with the Barclay record company ended. The success of their records waned. With Idées noires , a duet with Bernard Lavilliers , Nicoletta made a short-term comeback in 1983 and her last major hit. In the following years she devoted herself to working on the stage. She was among others in the role of Jenny in Brecht / Weil -Stück Grandeur et decadence de mahogany to see (1987). She also played the role of Esmeralda in William Sheller's musical Quasimodo in 1989 . Financial problems ensured that she toured heavily again in those years.
After many years without a new album , the less successful work J'attends, j'apprends was released in 1995 . The following year she was luckier with The Gospel Voices , a CD that celebrated her love for gospel music. A subsequent tour with around 180 dates in France, Switzerland, Belgium and even Japan was also successful. Numerous compilations of her old recordings ensured that the interest in Nicoletta's music rose again in the following years.
In 2002, the participants in the Star Academy casting show recorded a cover of Nicoletta's first success, La musique , which put it at number 1 in the French charts. Yet another four years passed before Nicoletta recorded a new album in 2006 entitled Le rendez-vous . It includes well-known jazz standards such as Summertime or Georgia On My Mind , but also new songs, written by artists such as Bernard Lavilliers, Patrick Eudeline or Manu Chao . At the end of 2008 Nicoletta published her autobiography La maison d'en face and celebrated her 40th stage anniversary the following year with an extensive tour of France.
Private
Nicoletta was married to the Swiss jeweler Patrick Chappuis from 1978 to 1985. Their son Alexandre was born in 1979.
