Dutch lessons in Germany

Dutch as a foreign language is in Germany almost exclusively at schools in North Rhine-Westphalia and Lower Saxony taught. Because of the geographical distance to the language area, it is rarely offered in the rest of Germany (individual schools in Bremen and Berlin). As a teaching subject , it was established in schools during the 1960s.

Lessons in North Rhine-Westphalia

In North Rhine-Westphalia, Dutch was taught in the school year 2018/2019 as a compulsory or optional subject at 47 schools at lower secondary level (4 secondary schools, 25 secondary schools, 16 secondary schools, 1 PRIMUS, 1 community school). 47 grammar schools and 53 comprehensive schools offered Dutch courses in the lower secondary level or in the upper secondary level as a basic or occasionally as an advanced course. In addition, Dutch lessons were given at 42 vocational colleges and two further training colleges. A total of 29,024 pupils learned Dutch at 191 schools.

Lessons in Lower Saxony

According to the survey (2010, NLSchB) in Lower Saxony, pupils from 19 primary schools and 59 secondary schools can take part in elective and compulsory elective courses in the Dutch language:

2 secondary schools, 23 secondary schools and 5 integrated comprehensive schools (from year 6), 17 grammar schools from year 6, 7 or 8 as well as 12 vocational grammar schools or vocational schools. Since the 1999/2000 school year, the number of schools has increased from 64 to 78. In the same period the number of pupils from 2225 to 4535. 5 grammar schools and 1 comprehensive school offer Dutch courses in their upper level as a basic course. At the vocational high schools it can also be listed as a subject relevant to the Abitur.

Adult education centers

In 2018 there were 1,773 Dutch courses at adult education centers . These were attended by 16,669 students. This makes Dutch the seventh most frequently taught foreign language at adult education centers nationwide after English, Spanish, Italian, French, Russian and Japanese.

University training to become a Dutch teacher in North Rhine-Westphalia and Lower Saxony with a first state examination , a Bachelor and Master of Education or a so-called extension examination as a qualification for teaching posts at Hauptschule, Realschule, secondary and comprehensive schools as well as at grammar schools and vocational colleges is on the universities of Cologne, Münster and Oldenburg possible. The legal clerkship can then be completed in NRW at the study seminars in Aachen, Jülich, Kleve, Krefeld, Münster, Bocholt or Rheine, and in Lower Saxony at the study seminars for grammar schools in Leer and Meppen; for BBS in Oldenburg and for GHRS in Nordhorn. In the case of an extension examination, a separate legal traineeship is not required. In the Lower Saxony state school authority in Aurich there is a coordination office for cooperation between Lower Saxony, Flanders and the Netherlands in the field of education.
