Lower Rhine Book of Augustine

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

German research describes a type of manuscript from the late Middle Ages as the Lower Rhine Book of Augustine , whose textual witnesses from the 15th and 16th centuries essentially contain the life of St. Augustine († 430) and sermons about Augustine.

Handwriting type

The anonymous life of the saints concerning Augustine is based on a Latin life of Augustine of the late Middle Ages (BHL 787, end of the 12th century / 13th century ), which in turn is largely based on the confessions of the Doctor of the Church and on the Augustine life of Possidius of Calama (BHL 785, before 439 ). BHL 787 was then the template for a translation of the so-called “Dutch Augustine Book”, from which - partly using additional texts by and about Augustine - a Lower Rhine editorial office was created. In addition to this Augustine life in the Lower Rhine region from the 15th century , there were sermons ( Sermones de sanctis ) by the Jordan of Quedlinburg (~ 1300–1370 / 80) in German translation. The latter contain: the sermon on the translation of Augustine (as it were as a continuation of the Vita), a sermon on the feast day of the saint, ten other sermons on Augustine. In addition to the main inventory of the Vita of the Lower Rhine editorial staff and sermons, some manuscripts contain other works by Augustine or some that are not related to Augustine. The “Niederrheinische Augustinusbuch” was aimed at an audience who did not speak Latin and was primarily intended for readers and listeners in religious women's communities (Augustinian convents).
