Niels Bolbrinker

Niels Bolbrinker (born 1951 in Hamburg ) is a German director and documentary filmmaker .

life and work

After studying photography and graduating in visual communication, Niels Bolbrinker worked as a freelance cameraman and director since the mid-1970s. In 1976 he was one of the founders of the Wendland Film Cooperative, an association of documentary filmmakers in the Lüchow-Dannenberg district, which is still dominated by the anti-nuclear movement . Bolbrinker was awarded the Federal Film Prize in 1977 as a cameraman and for the editing of “Do right and shy nobody” .

As a director and cameraman, Bolbrinker realized a number of socially critical documentary film projects, such as “It's a shame that concrete doesn't burn” (1981) or “Everything under control. Notes on the way to the surveillance state ”(1983). For the film "Zwischenzeit", about the resistance against the nuclear industry, Bolbrinker was awarded the Film Critics' Prize in 1986 .

1995 began with the documentary “Original Wolfen. From the history of a film factory ”his collaboration with Kerstin Stutterheim. Together, in 1998, the two realized the film "Bauhaus - Myth and Modernity" and "The Thuranos - Life on a Wire" (2003) about the artist dynasty of the same name. In 2009, “With Flies and Angels” followed, a documentary about the Russian artist Ilya Kabakov .

In addition to working as a documentary filmmaker, Bolbrinker continues to work as a cameraman in various film and television productions.
