from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Niels Otto Laursen Møller (born January 30, 1920 in Aarhus , † 1982 ibid) was a Danish furniture designer and furniture entrepreneur . His designs followed the style of the mid-century modern .

Life

Niels Otto Møller was a son of the master carpenter Jens Laursen Møller. He completed his apprenticeship as a cabinet maker in 1939 and then continued his training with a degree at the Design College in Aarhus. In 1944 he founded JL Møllers Møbelfabrik A / S , for which he produced designs and managed production.

The company grew and began exporting to Germany and the United States in 1952. Møller expanded the production facilities to keep pace with demand. In 1961 he bought a 33,000 m² plot of land in Højbjerg , a suburb of his hometown, and built a factory on it with a production area of 6000 m².

After training as a cabinet maker, Møller's sons Jens Ole (joined the company in 1966, † 1994) and Jørgen Henrik (1969) joined the company. In 1972 they enlarged the production area on site by a further 2500 m². From 1974 onwards, the family also exported furniture to Japan, which turned out to be one of their largest markets. In 1974 and 1981 the company received the Dansk MøbelIndustri furniture award .

After Niels Otto Møller's death in 1982, the two sons continued to run the company. The company is still family-owned today.

Work (selection)

Møller's designs for dining room chairs, armchairs, tables and sideboards, which he had made of high quality craftsmanship mostly from rosewood, teak, oak or walnut, avoided ornaments and were characterized by the simplicity, functionality and timelessly elegant curves that are common in Danish design in post-war modernism . The collection from Møller's furniture company was relatively small, which is due to the fact that he invested a lot of time in developing his uncompromising designs. It took up to five years to complete individual concepts before Møller was satisfied with the quality achieved.
