Niels Palladius , also Latinized as Nicolaus Palladius (* 1510 in Ribe , † September 17, 1560 in Lund ) was a Danish Lutheran theologian. From 1552 to 1560 he was superintendent ( bishop ) in the diocese of Lund .

Life

Niels Palladius was the younger brother of Peder Palladius , the reformer of Denmark and the first bishop of Zealand (Sjælland) . After attending school in Odense , he studied in Wittenberg from 1534 , where both Martin Luther and Philipp Melanchthon had a lasting impact on him, and in 1540 acquired the title of master's degree . He then became a preacher in Maribo . At the instigation of his brother, he was appointed pastor at the Vor Frue Kirke in Copenhagen in 1550 or 1551 . At the end of 1551 he was elected superintendent of the Lund diocese, which at that time still belonged to Denmark, and was introduced in April 1552. (It was not until the 17th century that the superintendents in Denmark and Norway reassumed the title of bishop.) He held this office until his death.

Palladius worked primarily through visitations and through his own publications and translations of German theological works to anchor Lutheran teaching. Most important were his Regulæ quædam utiles ac necessariæ, concionatoribus observandæ (1556), a manual for the doctrine of preaching, which was reprinted into the 17th century. In 1559 he crowned King Friedrich II (on behalf of his sick brother) .
