Niels Ryberg (born September 14, 1725 , † August 29, 1804 in Copenhagen ) was a Danish merchant, shipowner and landowner.

Life

With Ryberg & Thygesen, he owned the largest trading company in Denmark. He was director of the Asian Company and the Royal Danish West Indian Trading Company . Ryberg founded the Køng factory in Køng in 1781 , formerly one of the oldest and largest linen factories in Denmark. From 1784 until the closure of the factory in 1906, it was purveyor to the royal Danish court. The Køng Museum is now located in the former administration building .

In 1764 he married Margaretha Dorothea Otte (1749–1767), the daughter of the Eckernförde merchant and ship owner Friedrich Wilhelm Otte .

Trivia

The only Faroese Nobel Prize winner Niels Ryberg Finsen was named after Niels Ryberg.
