Niels Thorkild Rovsing

Niels Thorkild Rovsing (born April 26, 1862 in Flensburg , † January 14, 1927 in Copenhagen ) was a Danish surgeon. Named after him are the Rovsing sign (clinical sign of appendicitis ), the Rovsing operation (for cystic kidneys ) and the Rovsing syndrome (lower abdominal pain due to the presence of a horseshoe kidney due to vascular compression)

Rovsing studied at the University of Copenhagen , where he received his degree in 1885. He worked at the Louise Børnehospital from 1892 to 1902 , and later at the Red Cross Hospital.

In 1904 he became the head of surgery at Frederiks Hospital . From 1899 he was professor of surgery at the University of Copenhagen, where he was rector in the academic year 1919/20. Not least his demand for better surgical care led to the establishment of the Rigshospitalet in Copenhagen in 1910 .

In 1908 he founded the Danish Surgical Society ( Dansk Kirurgisk Selskap ) together with Eilert Tscherning (1851-1919 ). Some of his publications have also been translated into German and English.

Rovsing was honored with the Dannebrogden in 1902.
