Niels Wellenberg (born August 9, 1982 in Deventer ) is a Dutch football player . From 2009 to 2012 the defender was under contract with the Dutch first division club NEC from Nijmegen .

Career

In 2001/02 Wellenberg started his professional career with the then Eerste Divisie representative Go Ahead Eagles . There he quickly played his way into the regular squad of the team. After three years he moved to the Eredivisie at Twente Enschede . After Wellenberg came to 22 missions in his first season, he was used less in the two following years. It was not until the 2007/08 season that he found himself back in the regular eleven. This year Twente became runner-up. This success was repeated the following year and also made it to the final of the KNVB Cup . There the team failed at SC Heerenveen . The right-back's contract expired in summer 2009 and was not renewed. Finally, NEC Nijmegen secured the services of the defensive player. After he could no longer be used in the 2011/12 season due to the consequences of a knee operation, his contract, which expired at the end of the season, was no longer extended. Wellenberg has been without a club since then.
