It lies northeast of the tip of the Montes Agricola in the plain of the Oceanus Procellarum , northwest of the large Aristarchus crater . An unnamed dorsum runs parallel to the Dorsa Whiston von Nielsen in a north-westerly direction to Mons Rümker .

The crater was officially named by the IAU in 1973 after the Danish astronomer Axel Vilfrid Nielsen and the American physicist Harald Herborg Nielsen .
