Nigel David Jones, Baron Jones of Cheltenham (born March 30, 1948 in Cheltenham , Gloucestershire ) is a Liberal Democratic politician in the United Kingdom.

Early life

He worked as a computer administrator at Westminster Bank from 1965 to 1967 and as a programmer at International Computers Limited from 1967 to 1970 . In 1970/71 he worked as a systems analyst at an insurance company and in 1971 as a system programmer at Atkins Computing before returning to ICL in 1972 as a project manager where he worked until 1992.

Parliamentary career

Jones was a member of the Gloucestershire County Regional Assembly from 1989 and was elected to the House of Commons in the 1992 general election for the Cheltenham constituency. He kept this seat until the 2005 general election .

attack

On January 28, 2000, Robert Ashman Jones and his assistant Andrew Pennington attacked with a katana (samurai sword). Pennington was killed and Jones seriously injured. Jones had written a certificate of repute for Ashman when Ashman faced jail after breaking the ribs of a tax officer. He was charged with manslaughter and attempted murder, but the jury found him insane. He was admitted to Broadmoor Hospital for observation; the interior ministry allowed another trial in September. Ashman was found guilty of attempted murder and manslaughter with reduced culpability. Pennington was posthumously awarded the George Medal for his attempts to protect Jones.

Peerage

On May 13, 2005 it was announced that he would be named a Life Peer and the survey was made on June 20, 2005 as Baron Jones of Cheltenham , of Cheltenham in the County of Gloucestershire. He works as a consultant for Barlow Frith Communications, a Buckinghamshire-based public relations agency.

Personal

In 1981 he married Katherine Grinnell. They have one son and two daughters.
