The Japan Atomic Energy Agency ( Jap. 日本原子力研究開発機構 , dt as "Japanese Atomenergieforschungs- and -entwicklungsorganisation" short Genshiryoku Kiko (. 原子力機構 ); Engl. Japan Atomic Energy Agency , "Japanese Atomic Energy Agency", short JAEA ) based in Tōkai (Ibaraki) is a Japanese self-governing body ( dokuritsu gyōsei hōjin ) under the supervision of the Ministry of Culture and Science and the Ministry of Economics and Industry . It was created in 2005 through the merger of Nihon Genshiryoku Kenkyūjo ("Japanese Nuclear Power Research Institute ", English JAERI ) and the Kakunenryō Cycle Kaihatsu Kikō ("Nuclear Fuel Cycle Development Organization ", English JNC ) and operates several research facilities and prototypes of nuclear research. It has its seat in the village of Tōkai in the eastern Japanese prefecture of Ibaraki , a second main location is Tsuruga in the prefecture of Fukui , for administrative tasks and the contact to the central government and parliament it also maintains an office in Chiyoda , prefecture Tokyo .

The legal basis of the self-governing body is its own law, the Nihon Genshiryoku Kenkyū Kaihatsu Kikō-hō ( 日本 原子 力 研究 開 発 機構 法 ). The tasks defined therein include basic and applied research for the use of nuclear energy and the fuel cycle, as well as promoting the application of the research results obtained.

The management of the Genshiryoku Kikō has a general director ( rijichō , English President ), who is appointed by the minister of culture and science after hearing the Genshiryoku-anzen-iinkai , the atomic energy safety commission of the cabinet office , for five-year terms . The board also includes a vice general director ( fuku-rijichō , English Executive Vice President ), who also heads the secondary headquarters in Tsuruga, seven other directors ( riji , English executive directors ) and two auditors ( kanji , English auditor ). Acting general director until 2015 is Atsuyuki Suzuki , previously a professor at the University of Tokyo and head of the nuclear energy safety commission of the cabinet office. In fiscal 2008, the organization had nearly 4,000 full-time employees and a total budget of over 210 billion yen .

Reactors and research institutes

The facilities and research programs operated by Genshiryoku Kikō include the research and prototype reactors Monju (fast breeder), Fugen (ATR), Jōyō (SFR), the HTTR in Ōarai, the fusion research program JT-60, the research reactor JRR-3 , the J-PARC research complex and, in collaboration with RIKEN, the SPring-8 particle accelerator .

Incidents

In a deflagration on May 26, 2013, around 30 employees were briefly exposed to radiation in the Tokaimura research laboratory . The affected persons were taken to a hospital for control.
