Nikola Mitic

Nikola Mitić (born November 27, 1938 in Niš , Kingdom of Yugoslavia , † January 25, 2019 ) was a Yugoslav opera singer ( bass baritone ).

Life

After graduating from high school, Nikola Mitić became a member of the Radio Belgrade Radio Choir . He then enrolled at the Belgrade Music Academy for solo singing, where he received lessons from M. Stojadinović and M. Miklavčič. Further studies were carried out to perfect the voice with the tenor Vladimiro Badiali in Milan .

After the first semester he was engaged at the Belgrade National Opera and after a year (1964) was the youngest soloist at the house. In 1965 he made his debut at the National Opera Belgrade with the role of Valentin in Charles Gounod's opera Faust . Until his stage farewell, he was a permanent member of the Belgrade National Opera ensemble without interruption. There Mitić developed into one of the leading singers in the baritone and bass-baritone field. He particularly emerged as a Verdi interpreter, with roles such as Rigoletto , Marquis Posa , Macbeth , Simone Boccanegra and Jago . His other leading roles included Riccardo in I Puritani , Enrico in Lucia di Lammermoor , the title role in Figaro's Wedding and the title roles in the Tchaikovsky operas Eugene Onegin and Mazeppa .

He also appeared several times at the Slovenian National Theater in Maribor, a. a. in the 1990/91 season as Germont-père in La Traviata and in March 1996 as Rigoletto.

In 1968 he performed with the ensemble of the Belgrade Opera in Copenhagen , in 1970 at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona . In 1971 he appeared at the Teatro Comunale di Bologna as Jeletzky in Pique Dame . In February 1971 he made his debut at the Vienna State Opera as Carlo in Verdi's opera La forza del destino . There he also sang Silvio in I Pagliacci (1971–1975, several times with Wilma Lipp as partner), Count Luna in Il trovatore (November / December 1973) and Germont-père in La Traviata (January 1974). He has also performed at the Philadelphia Opera House (1970), the Deutsche Oper am Rhein Düsseldorf-Duisburg (1971), the Perugia Festival (1973), the Rome Opera (1975) and the Dublin Opera House (1976).

As a concert singer, Mitić has performed vocal and orchestral works by Bach , Bartok , Benjamin Britten , Gabriel Fauré , Handel and Stravinsky .

Since 1992 he has been teaching as a singing teacher at the Belgrade National Opera. In November 2018, on the occasion of his 80th birthday, an exhibition entitled Nikola Mitic - Baritone of the 20th Century was opened in the Museum of the National Opera in Belgrade . Mitić died at the age of 81.

Nikola Mitić had a “pastose”, “in the entire register” uniform, musical and straightforward voice. A live recording of the Tchaikovsky opera Mazeppa with Mitić in the title role was released on the Myto label .
