Nicholas Benois and Nicolas Benois ( Russian Николай Леонтьевич Бенуа / Nikolai Leontyevich Benua ; born July 1, jul. / 13. July  1813 greg. In Saint Petersburg , † December 11 jul. / 23. December  1898 greg. ) Was a Russian architect.

life and work

He was the son of the French-born cook at the Tsar's court Louis César Benois and the German-born court lady Anna Katharina born. Gropp. Benois attended the Petri School and from 1828 to 1830 the Imperial Academy of Arts Saint Petersburg . In 1844 he was appointed court architect by Czar I. Nicholas appointed. In the years 1847–1852, Benois supervised the construction of the imperial stables in Peterhof Palace .

Benois is the architect of the Roman Catholic Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary, built in Saint Petersburg between 1856 and 1859, in neo-Romanesque style. These and the associated cemetery were desecrated, converted and built over during the Soviet era. The tower of the church was demolished in 1978. Since 2005, services have been held in the dilapidated church.

He is known for his love of neo-Gothic architecture and design. Its station buildings in Strelna , Tsarskoje Selo and Neu- Peterhof are famous . He also designed the building of the Swedish theater in Helsinki ( Nya Teatern , 1866). Benois was buried in St. Petersburg in the Volkovo Cemetery. His son Leonti Benois was also buried there.

He married Camilla Cavos, the daughter of the Italian architect Alberto Cavos, who built the Mariinsky Theater in St. Petersburg . The couple had three sons: Alexander Benois , a well-known stage designer; Albert Benois , who became a painter, and Leonti Benois , who among other things was the architect of the Russian Chapel on Mathildenhöhe in Darmstadt .
