Nikolai Nikolajewitsch Melnik ( Russian: Николай Николаевич Мельник ; born December 17, 1953 in Stavyshche ; † July 26, 2013 in Alicante ) was a Soviet helicopter pilot .

Life

Melnik's father was a test pilot for the first versions of the MiG . He himself worked as a pilot instructor in Kremenchuk . Nikolai Melnik became famous in 1986 when he helped with the rescue work after the Chernobyl disaster and, among other things, helped to install sensors for measuring radiation. After about 40 approaches to the reactor, he received a total dose of about 1.6 Sievert (at least five times the so-called disaster dose ). In 1987 he was awarded the title " Hero of the Soviet Union " for his work in Chernobyl .

After the end of the Soviet Union, he went to Spain in 1995 , where he lived with his family in Alicante. He worked there as an instructor for helicopter pilots and helped with fire fighting aircraft . In 1998 he received an award from King Juan Carlos for his extinguishing operations.
