The Nikolaikirche in Linz / Urfahr (also St. Nikolauskirche) was a former Roman Catholic church building from around 1500. After its profanation in 1789, it was first used as a grain bin and later as a residential building. In 1975 it was demolished along with other buildings for the construction of the New Linz City Hall .

history

The building of the church is based on a letter of grace from Emperor Friedrich III. from 1492, in which he allowed the Urfahrans to read masses in their own chapel . In 1505 the bishop of the diocese of Passau , to which Upper Austria belonged at the time, consecrated this chapel. Its main altar was consecrated to Saint Nicholas and Saint Christopher , the two side altars to Saint Sebastian and Saint Leopold , or the fourteen helpers in need . It was already determined in the letter of grace that the new church should not diminish the influence of the Linz parish, so no parish of its own was founded. The money is also likely to have run out: a view of Urfahr from 1511/13, the original of which is in the National Museum in Budapest , shows a still unfinished-looking high Gothic building with a turret .

From the end of the 16th to the beginning of the 17th century, mainly Lutheran services took place in the church, but this changed with the final implementation of the Counter-Reformation from 1626. Since 1632, Jesuits preached in Urfahr. In the years 1706 and 1707 the Gothic building was expanded and baroque, and instead of the old ridge turret, it received a tower.

In the course of the Josephine church reforms , the Urfahr parish was established in the neighboring Capuchin monastery, which was closed in 1785. The former monastery church became the new parish church . This led to the profanation of the Nikolaikirche in 1789. The Urfahraner local cemetery , which was located at the Nikolaikirche, was moved to the former monastery garden. After that, the building served as a grain bin and, after a renovation in 1824, during which, among other things, the tower was removed up to the roof level, as a residential building. The building was finally demolished in 1975 for the construction of the New Town Hall.

Nikolaikapelle

The "Nikolaikapelle memorial room" (also known as the "Nikolaikapelle") has been located at the former site of the church by the New Town Hall since 1985. It is a square granite building with a stepped copper roof. Inside there is an installation by Hans Hoffmann-Ybbs and memorabilia from Alt-Urfahr.
