Nikolaos Myrepsos

Nikolaos Myrepsos (Greek myrepso : "ointment cook ", "ointment maker"; 13th / 14th century) was a Byzantine doctor and author of the Dynameron , the most extensive pharmacopoeia of the Christian Middle Ages .

Life

Nikolaos may have been practicing at the court of the Byzantine emperor John III. Dukas Vatatzes.

Nikolaos Myrepsos wrote his pharmacological compilation Dynameron , based on Greek and Latin sources from the 6th to 12th centuries, probably between 1270 and 1290. It is an antidotary containing 2,656 formulations.

reception

The Dynameron or Antidotarum was translated into Latin in the 14th century by Nicholas of Reggio . In 1549 Leonhard Fuchs had it printed by Johannes Oporinus in Basel. It was an official pharmacopoeia in France until 1651.
