Nikolaus Graf von Luckner (born February 24, 1894 in Friedeberg (Neumark) , † September 24, 1966 in Meerholz ) was a German major general .

career

Luckner joined the army in 1912 and, after appropriate training, was employed as a lieutenant and orderly officer in the 4th Grenadier Regiment. At the beginning of the First World War he underwent training as a fighter pilot and was then taken on as a pilot of the 45th field flight battalion. During a mission he was shot down behind enemy lines, but was able to save himself and return to his home base. After a four-month convalescence leave, Luckner resumed his aviation career and was primarily employed as a flight instructor at several locations. After the war his association was demobilized and Luckner went into early military retirement in 1920.

In 1933 Luckner first joined the Wehrmacht as an employee and was taken on as a consultant in the Reich Aviation Ministry . In July 1934 he resumed his military service and was employed as a squadron captain in Luftflotte 1 , where he was promoted to major in 1935 and lieutenant colonel in 1937. From July 1, 1938 to September 24, 1940, he was in charge of the Schönwalde air base near Berlin as a colonel and commander and was also the commander of the local pilot training and training center and pilot school. During the Second World War , from 1940 to 1943 he was in command of the Air Force Base and Air War School 3 in Wildpark-Werder . During this time he designed and awarded the Air War School Medal of Honor 3 as a non-bearable award . On April 1, 1944, Luckner was promoted to major general and at the end of the war he was taken prisoner by the Americans, from which he was released on March 3, 1947.

Luckner was married to Barbara Eleonore zur Lippe-Biesterfeld (born January 30, 1897, † January 16, 1983) since October 16, 1919 .
