Nicholas Popping

Nikolaus Popping (*; † January 17, 1583 in Lübeck ) was a German lawyer, secretary of the Hanseatic Office in Antwerp and council secretary of the Hanseatic city of Lübeck.

Life

Nikolaus Popping was the son of the Lübeck mountain driver Sondag Popping. He was related by marriage to the Lübeck Council Secretary Thomas Rehbein . In 1552 he studied law at the University of Wittenberg and the University of Rostock . He completed his studies with a master's degree. From 1558 to 1564 he was secretary of the Hanseatic Office in Antwerp . In 1565 he was hired as registrar by the Lübeck council and in 1569 he was appointed council secretary. He kept the Oberstadtbuch from 1578, his appointment as protonotary did not take place until 1579. His son Friedrich Popping also became council secretary in Lübeck, his grandson Johann Pöpping rose from council secretary to councilor.
