Nilsen Island is a small island off the south coast of South Georgia . It is located 2.5 km west of the northern part of Novosilski Bay .
Scientists from the UK Discovery Investigations mapped them in the 1930s. The South Georgia Survey carried out its own mapping as part of its surveying campaign carried out from 1951 to 1957. The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee named it in 1958 after Nochart Nilsen (1894-unknown), harpooner the Compañía Argentina de Pesca at Grytviken 1939-1940 and 1946-1948 and from 1949 for some years at the South Georgia Whaling Company in Leith Harbor .
