Ninnuam is a Swedish black and death metal band from Katrineholm , which was founded in 2001 under the name Yxa .

history

The band was formed in 2001 and was known for the first seven months under the name Yxa, which is the Swedish word for ax. The group initially consisted of the guitarist Kim Laakso, the guitarist Robert Gustafsson, the bassist Andreas "Lenny" Jennische and the drummer Thord Brännkärr. The band was initially without a singer before Mattias Johansson, aka "Matte Hellcore", joined the band and took up this position. At the same time Robert Johansson joined the line-up as keyboard player. The band then called themselves Ninnuam, the name being borrowed from the Necronomicon . In 2002 Måns Jaktlund joined the line-up as the new bass player, after which the band recorded the demo Scar Salvation , which consisted of four songs. The following year the band signed a contract with the Finnish label Low Frequency Records . The band then recorded their debut album Process of Life Separation , which was released on the label in 2003 in Scandinavia . In the US , the album was distributed in 2004 through Crash Music . In July 2005, keyboardist Johansson left the line-up. In 2007 singer Johansson left the band to devote himself to his other band Centicore. A short time later, singer Stephanie Rudert joined the group as a suitable replacement. Guitarist Gustafsson also left the band shortly afterwards and was replaced by Thomas Wahlberg. In 2009 singer Rudert left the band again. After Joakim Gustafsson joined the band as the new singer, she recorded six new songs for a follow-up to the debut album. In 2010 a demo was released that contained three songs, on which the band insisted on singer Gustafsson, guitarists Laakso and Wahlberg, bassist Jaktl and drummer Brännkärr. In the same year the line-up of the band changed. At the beginning of 2011 the next album followed with the band name as the title. In the meantime Mattias Johansson has returned to the band, where he no longer acts as a singer, but as a guitarist.

style

According to Allmusic's Alex Henderson, the band play a mix of black and death metal and shouldn't be confused with symphonic black metal or melodic death metal , despite the initial use of a keyboardist . The band was heavily influenced by groups like Dark Funeral , Slayer , Cradle of Filth , Obituary , Dimmu Borgir and early Entombed . The songs often deal with Satanism , although according to guitarist Laakso it is not the job of the band to preach these ideologies. On Process of Life Separation, according to Melanie Aschenbrenner from Metal Hammer, the band play an unoriginal mix of Black and Death Metal, with the use of blastbeats and the subtle use of keyboards being characteristic. The album is about a fictional unsolved murder.
