The island of Nissan is the main island of the Nissan Atoll of the same name and the Green Islands as a whole, which consist of the Nissan and Pinipel atolls . Like all islands in the Green Islands, Nissan belongs to the Bougainville Autonomous Region in Papua New Guinea .

Nissan is the easternmost and southernmost island in the Hibernian Islands . It has an area of 37 km² and rises up to 34 m above sea level.
Nissan had about 6,810 inhabitants in 2011. Two Austronesian languages are spoken.
Nissan is approached by supply ships from Rabaul ( New Britain ) and Buka at irregular intervals. The runway from World War II still exists, but has not been used since 2007. The only notable branch of the economy is the export of copra .
