Nobuyuki Tsujii ( Japanese 辻 井 伸 行 , Tsujii Nobuyuki ; born September 13, 1988 ) is a classical pianist from Japan .

Life

Tsujii was born blind as a result of microphthalmia and showed musical talent from an early age. He played Jingle Bells on the children's piano at the age of two after hearing the melody sung. He began his musical education at the age of four and made his stage debut with the Osaka Century Symphony at the age of ten. At the age of twelve he played at Suntory Hall in Tokyo , and in 2011 at Carnegie Hall . From 2007 to 2011 he studied at Ueno Gakuen University . In October 2007 he released his first album Début , which had sold over 190,000 times by July 2009.

In 2009 Tsujii was together with Haochen Zhang the first Asian winner of the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition and also the first blind winner of this competition. During the 17-day elimination, he played Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 29 and, in the final round, Chopin's 1st Piano Concerto and two days later Rachmaninov's 2nd Piano Concerto . As a result, his debut album entered the Oricon charts again at the end of June with more than 17,000 units sold at number 8.
