Once again! is a dice game with six dice by Inka and Markus Brand , which was published by Schmidt Spiele in 2016 . The aim of the game is to fill the color fields on a game block as quickly as possible and to score as many points as possible.

Gameplay

The game principle is kept very simple and is reminiscent of classic dice games such as Kniffel or Bingo . The game material consists of a game block and six dice, whereby three dice are color dice with five colors and a joker and three dice are number dice with 1 to 5 eyes and a joker (question mark). There are also six felt-tip pens for crossing the fields. It can be played with up to six players, although there is also a solo version. A game is scheduled to play around 20 minutes and the recommended minimum age for players is eight, as addition and strategic thinking are required. The aim of the game is to mark as many color fields and rows as possible on the game block and thus to achieve as many points as possible.

Game flow

Actions per turn
  • the active player rolls six dice
  • the active player chooses a combination of number and color dice
  • all other players choose a combination
  • all players cross the corresponding fields
  • all players check their columns for possible ratings
  • all players control their colors for possible ratings

At the beginning of the game each player receives a scoring sheet. The dice are rolled once in turn, beginning with a selected starting player. The active player receives the three color and the three number dice and rolls all six dice once. He chooses a combination of a color and a number die from the roll and can enter this on his sheet, the other players can also combine a color and a number die each and enter the result. In the first three throws, all players can use the same dice, but in the following rounds the inactive players can only choose from the remaining four dice. Both the active and all other players can also pass at any time and not choose any dice.

The entry is made on the rating slip, which is the same for all players. The number of crosses indicated on the number die is always ticked in the color determined by the color die. The first litter entered must always be entered in the middle column H on the scoring sheet, subsequent entries must always be horizontally or vertically adjacent to fields that have already been crossed or also begin in column H. The players must also always make all crosses in a contiguous block of one color and must not let any points expire. Since the number die only has values up to 5, you can never place more than five crosses. The question mark on the number die and the black × on the color die are jokers that can be used for any value from 1 to 5 or for any color. For each used, the player has to cross off one of the eight! Fields on his rating slip and when all! Fields have been crossed off, he no longer has a joker.

Dice: The black X and the question mark are both wild cards.

As soon as a player has crossed a complete column, he can score this column. The first player to score a column receives the points given in the top row and circles them; if several players achieve this rating with the same throw, they all receive full points. All others cross out this rating and can only achieve the points given in the lower row of ratings. As soon as a player has ticked off all boxes of a color, he announces this and circles the front color bonus field with 5 points, all others cross off this rating and can only reach the second rating with 3 points; Here, too, several players can achieve the rating with one throw and then get the full 5 points.

The game ends after the round in which at least one player has been able to circle his second color bonus field, i.e. has crossed two colors completely. The points for the game are then determined on the score sheet:

  • The color bonuses received are added up in the bonus line,
  • the column bonuses received are added in rows A – O,
  • in the! -line the player gets one point for each unused joker exclamation mark,
  • in the * line, the player receives two minus points and for each star symbol that is not crossed on the piece of paper
  • in the total line all points are added and the final result is formed.

The winner is the player with the most points and in the event of a tie, the player who still has the most jokers available.

Solo game

In the solo game, the player tries to collect as many points as possible. In contrast to the multiplayer game, he only rolls two color and number dice and chooses a combination from each. The game runs over 30 rounds and after each throw the player makes a diagonal line as a half cross in the top row of letters, which is completed as a cross in the next round. When all 15 fields are marked with a cross, the player evaluates the slip of paper.

Encore!

In 2017, Schmidt Spiele released the Encore !, which consists of three new rating blocks. These scoring blocks differ in the division of the color fields from the standard blocks, which opens up new possibilities in the game.

Expenses and reception

Once again! was developed by Inka and Markus Brand and published by Schmidt Spiele 2016 for the international game days in Essen. In the Netherlands the game was released under the title Keer op Keer at 999 Games and in 2017 Schmidt Spiele brought the game under the name Encore! also on the French market.

The game was subsequently discussed on numerous platforms and generally rated positively to very positively. For example, the Osnabrücker Zeitung compared the game with the games Qwixx by Steffen Benndorf and Qwinto by Uwe Rapp and Bernhard Lach and rated the game with a rating of 5 (strong), the reviewer sums up with “We are not satisfied with one game. Despite the constant challenge, the title “Again!” Really says it all. Fortunately the block is quite thick. "Sandra Lemberger from h@ll9000.de rated the game with 4.8 out of 6 points and brettspielbox.de describes the game as follows:" Nothing stands in the way of long-term fun. And I believe that one more time! will be included in his game program. Newbies are quickly integrated into the game and so in the end there is only a small entry hurdle that is quickly forgotten. "Daniel Wünsche from knopfspiele.de explicitly reviews the solo mode of the game:" The game plays really great solo. It's very comfortable and plays very easy. Every game the score improves in the first few games, and at some point passing is also an option so that you end up with the better number of points. The balance between luck and tactics is really good here. "
