Game of the year 2013: nominated |
Qwixx is a dice game with six dice by Steffen Benndorf , which was published in 2012 by Nürnberger-Spielkarten-Verlag . The game was nominated for Game of the Year 2013 as one of three games, but could not prevail against the game Hanabi . In 2014 Qwixx won the Dutch Games Award .
Style of play
Game principle and material
The game principle is kept very simple and is reminiscent of classic dice games like Kniffel . The game material consists of a game block and six dice, two of which are white and one of each is red, blue, yellow and green. It can be played with two to five players, with around 15 minutes of playing time being allowed for a game. The recommended age of the players is eight years as the addition and strategic thinking are required. The aim of the game is to mark as many numbers as possible in the four rows of colors on the game block and thus to achieve as many points as possible.
Game flow
The starting player is drawn, the players in turn roll the dice. The active player in each case throws all six dice openly and then adds the results of the two white dice as the first action and announces the result openly. All players may now tick the number he announced in any color row. The numbers in each of the four color rows must always be crossed from left to right, with omissions being allowed. However, these omissions cannot be ticked later. Then, as a second action, the active player may add the number of points on a white die with that of a colored die and tick the total in the corresponding row of his game block. If the active player does not make a cross either for the total of the white dice or for the total of colors, he notes the throw as a miss.
In order to complete a color row on the game block, there must be at least five crosses in it, whereby the last field on the far right must be free. If this is the case, the player can tick this field with a suitable throw and thus complete the row. In addition to the number, he then crosses the lock symbol at the end of the row and announces this out loud. If this happens when adding the white dice (first action), other players can also complete the row after the announcement and tick the lock symbol, provided that they already have five crosses in the corresponding row. When a color row has been completed, it is closed for all players in the following rounds and no player is allowed to make crosses in this color row. The corresponding color die is removed from the game.
The game ends when someone has ticked their fourth miscarriage, or when two color rows have been completed and two color dice have been removed from the game. Then the scoring takes place according to the table of values below the color rows per color, whereby this represents a sum of the number of crosses. The maximum number of points in a row with 12 crosses results accordingly as:
- .
For each missed throw, the respective player receives five minus points. The winner is the player with the highest total score.
Qwixx characters
For the International Game Days 2017 in Essen, an expansion to the Qwixx game consisting of five character cards was released with Qwixx Characters . Each player is given one of the cards at random before the game or they can be chosen by them. With the character cards, the players can use a characteristic of the character at any time and in this way influence the game.
The game with Qwixx characters follows the usual Qwixx rules. However, the currently active player can always use the attribute of the character assigned to him when it is his turn:
character | property |
---|---|
Double Dutch | The Double Dutch may roll the dice twice instead of just once and decide whether to roll all or part of the dice again on the second roll. The scoring only follows after the second throw. |
Tina Turner | Tina Turner is allowed to turn a 3 to a 4 and vice versa after her throw, the scoring only follows after the second throw. |
Magic Mike | Magic Mike may subsequently enter a score between two crosses on his scoring pad, between which exactly one space is free. He can do this for either outcome of the throw. |
Chriss Cross | Chriss Cross may enter up to three instead of only two crosses after rolling his own dice. He can use the combination white / white once and white and any color twice. |
Miss Take | If Miss Take is unable to enter a cross after her own throw, she does not have to mark a miss and can instead, according to the rules, enter a cross anywhere on the scoring bar with the exception of the last digit. |

reception
The dice game Qwixx was nominated for selection for Game of the Year 2013 alongside Hanabi , a card game by Antoine Bauza , and Augustus , a parlor game by Paolo Mori . The nomination was justified with the following words:
“With minimal use of materials, Qwixx offers maximum fun with cubes. The quick game in the small box and with the quickly understood rules inspires all generations equally. Since everyone can benefit from every throw, all players are always looking forward to the next result. Take risks or act cautiously? The entertaining mixture of luck and tactics has the potential to become a long-runner - especially since it fits in any luggage. "
In 2014 Qwixx won the Dutch Games Award . Building on the game, several variants have appeared since the game was released. In 2013 Qwixx Deluxe and Qwixx XL , 2014 Qwixx mixed and Qwixx - Das Kartenspiel! , 2015 Qwixx: Big Points and 2016 the 2-person game Qwixx: Das Duell published. In 2017, Qwixx Characters, an expansion to the Qwixx game consisting of five character cards , was released for the 2017 International Game Days in Essen .
