The text is an inventory list of the cheese wheels , which was drawn up by a monk in the Monasterio de los santos Justo y Pastor in Rozuela near León . Stylistically, the language used is far from the legal Latin, which was used for most of the documents of that time, many groups of words are repeated and the nodicia appears very spontaneous and freely written.

The document, dated about AD 974 , was written on the back of another document, a deed of donation from 956 , which had lost its meaning. While the language of the deed of gift is regular Latin, the Nodicia was written in Vulgar Latin , which was customary at the time . It is thus the oldest known written application of Vulgar Latin in the Iberian Peninsula , from which Leonese developed in this area.

The document is a reflection of the language used at the time, as it was spoken. All other sources from that period reflect the literary language used, Latin. The language of the document corresponds to the then developing dialect in the Kingdom of León and can therefore not be ascribed to today's Castilian or Asturian.

The original is kept in the archives of the Cathedral of León as manuscript 852v .
