Nokia 8110i

The Nokia 8110 is a mobile phone from Nokia that was released in 1996. It was announced on September 9, 1996 as the first of Nokia's high-end 8000 series of phones. It was the first mobile phone with a new form factor. A sliding cover (slider) protected the keyboard when it was carried in the pocket and extended the device downwards when in use, so that the microphone moved closer to the mouth. Incoming calls were also accepted when the lid was opened. The curvature of the case, especially when open, earned it the nickname “banana phone”. It was the first Nokia cell phone with a monochrome graphic LCD .

The phone was developed for the business market and was one of the smallest and lightest (152 grams) on the market, but had a longer battery life than its predecessor, the Nokia 2110.

The improved Model 8110i, announced in March 1997, was the first phone to feature the SSMS (Smart SMS ) engine. The handsets could be updated OTA (Over The Air) with an intelligent menu structure that allowed for simple information input, an input that was sent to an MT recipient via a simply structured text message. This station could interpret information and send structured text messages back to the handset. Receiving ringtone via SMS was also part of the Smart Messaging Protocol, so the 8110i was also the first mobile phone to support it. Nokia later stopped marketing smart messaging and focused on the upcoming WAP standard, but didn't drop support for smart messaging from later phones. Both models were replaced by the Nokia 8810 in 1998.

The Nokia 8110 became famous for the science fiction action film " Matrix (1999) " for which it was modified with a spring mechanism (this model later appeared as the Nokia 7110 ).
