Nora Bayes
Nora Bayes (born November 29, 1880 in Joliet , Illinois , USA , † March 19, 1928 in Brooklyn , New York City , New York ) was an American singer.
Her real name was Eleanor "Dora" Goldberg . At seventeen she married her first husband, Otto Gressing. She began her vaudeville career in Chicago , then moved to San Francisco and in 1901 New York , where she founded her own theater, the Nora Bayes Theater. Bayes was married five times. Her best-known song, Shine On, Harvest Moon , was created in collaboration with her second husband, Jack Norworth , with whom she was married from 1908 to 1913. It was included in the Ziegfeld Follies of 1908 and later performed and recorded many times, strangely enough, but never again by Nora Bayes and Jack Norworth, who only started this attempt once in 1910. Nora Bayes died of cancer and was buried in Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx .
In 1944 her life was filmed by Warner Brothers under the title Shine On, Harvest Moon with Ann Sheridan . The film is not considered to be particularly realistic, but brings many of the songs that made Bayes famous.
