Nora Marks Dauenhauer

Nora Marks Dauenhauer or Keixwenei (* 1927 in Syracuse , New York ; † September 25, 2017 ) was an American author . She wrote poetry and short stories in Tlingit and English .

Life

Nora Marks Dauenhauer was the daughter of Emma and Willie Marks, a member of the tribe of Tlingit from the area of Juneau in Alaska . Due to the inheritance in the female line common among the Tlingit, she belonged to the Raven branch of the Tlingit. Her maternal grandfather was Frank Italio (1870-1956), who worked with the anthropologist Frederica de Laguna .

In 1976, Nora Marks Dauenhauer graduated from the Methodist University of Alaska . She was a member of the Shax'saanikee . Together with her husband Richard Dauenhauer , a poet and translator, she co-edited the Classics of Tlingit Oral Literature series .
