Norbert Egger (born October 11, 1939 in Weinheim ) is a German lawyer and local politician (SPD). From 1989 to 2005 he was the first mayor of Mannheim .

Political career

Norbert Egger was born on October 11, 1939 in Weinheim. After studying law in Munich and Heidelberg, he joined the legal office of the city of Mannheim in 1968, where he quickly rose to the position of deputy head of office. At the same time, he completed his doctoral thesis and was involved in the SPD in the Weinheim municipal council. In 1977 he ran for the office of Lord Mayor in Sindelfingen.

From 1973 he headed the Mannheim property office until 1979 when he became the commercial director of the Gemeinnützige Baugesellschaft Mannheim mbH (GBG).

On March 1, 1981, he moved back to the city administration as head of Department II: As mayor, he was responsible for finances, housing, energy and water supply, and local transport. He is considered one of the pioneers of the Rhein-Neckar transport association .

In 1989 he was elected First Mayor. He held this position until his retirement in 2005.

Engagements

Egger was also involved in the German Association of Cities , at EU level and for economic and cultural exchange between Mannheim, especially with the Far East. He is an honorary citizen of the Chinese cities of Zhenjiang and Qingdao and initiated the Chinese Garden in Mannheim's Luisenpark .
