Norbert Faustenhammer

Norbert Faustenhammer (born May 13, 1937 in Vienna ) is an Austrian lawyer and diplomat .

Life

Norbert Faustenhammer obtained a doctorate in law from the University of Vienna . He then began an administrative career in the Federal Ministry of Economics . From 1974 to 1982 he was Austrian envoy to the European free trade organization EFTA in Geneva, from 1982 to 1987 Deputy Secretary General of EFTA. From 1987 to 2002 he was the ambassador of Austria to the World Trade Organization WTO , the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe UNECE and numerous other international organizations in Geneva.

Faustenhammer played a key role in establishing trade relations between EFTA and Eastern European countries before the fall of communism and was one of the pioneers for the European Economic Area and Austria's accession to the European Union . As Austria's envoy to the WTO, he participated in numerous negotiations on the liberalization of world trade, which culminated in the Millennium Round. Faustenhammer has been awarded the Great Silver Medal of Honor of the Republic of Austria.
