Norbert Gissel

Norbert Gissel (* 1959 ) is a German sports educator , sports historian and university lecturer .

Life

Gissel studied sports science and history at the Justus Liebig University in Gießen between 1980 and 1985. From 1986 to 1991 he was employed at the chair for sports didactics at the Giessen University as a research assistant and then from 1991 to 2011 as a senior teacher. In 1988 he completed his doctoral thesis there (title: "Founding history and structure of the State Sports Association of Hesse") and his habilitation in 1994 (title: "From boy gymnastics to the science of physical culture"). In 1995 Gissel was one of the winners of the "Wolfgang Mittermaier Prize", which the Justus Liebig University in Giessen claims to award for "outstanding performance" in teaching. In 1999 Gissel was appointed adjunct professor at the University of Giessen. He lectured at the Philipps University of Marburg , the Ruhr University Bochum and the University of Koblenz-Landau . In Bochum, he took up a professorship in the field of sports education and sports didactics at the Faculty of Sports Science.

At the German Association for Sports Science (DVS), of which he became a member in 1986, he was a member of the board from 1999 to 2003. From 1995 to 1999 he was on the board of the DVS section for sports history.

Gissel's main topics include physical education and sports history. In the latter area, among other things, he dealt with the history of gymnastics in the city of Gießen , he also contributed to the “Handbuch Sportgeschichte” and wrote the chapter “Basics and methods of sports historical research” for the work together with Michael Krüger and Hans Langenfeld .
