Hans Langenfeld (born July 4, 1932 in Kolberg , Pomerania Province ) is a German sports scientist and sports historian.

Life

After fleeing from Western Pomerania at the end of the war , the family settled in Schleswig-Holstein , where Langenfeld graduated from high school in Oldenburg in Holstein in 1952, and from the 1952 summer semester studied Latin, mathematics and physical exercises for a higher level teacher at the University of Kiel . After a one-year stint at the University of Vienna , he passed the first state examination in 1957 and the second state examination in 1960. After two years of teaching, he was appointed to the university service at the Institute for Classical Antiquity (1962–1964), where he was also awarded a Dr. phil. before he switched to the sports institute as senior teacher. In 1970 he was appointed to a professorship for physical education at the Braunschweig department of the Lower Saxony University of Education. In 1974 he was offered the newly created chair for sports science / sports education at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster . He held this position until his retirement in 1997. He was also partially dean of the sports science faculty. Even if Langenfeld did not write a monograph on the history of sport, he enriched the sport historiography of the 19th and 20th centuries with a large number of essays, editions and publications. His successor on the professorship was Michael Krüger (sports scientist) , who continued the tradition of historical sports education.

Langenfeld was a founding member of the Lower Saxony Institute for Sports History and has been a member of the Scientific Advisory Board since it was founded (from 1990 to 2010 Chairman of the Advisory Board as successor to Arnd Krüger ). In 2002 he was awarded the Dr. Bernhard Zimmermann Medal and in 2014 he was accepted into the Honor Gallery of Lower Saxony Sports at the Lower Saxony Institute for Sports History.
