Norbert Hanel

Norbert Hanel (* 1958 in Langenfeld (Rhineland) ) is a German provincial Roman archaeologist .

From 1977 to 1987, Hanel studied Roman provincial archeology, ancient history, prehistory and early history and classical archeology in Cologne and Freiburg im Breisgau . In 1987 he received his doctorate in Freiburg with Hans Ulrich Nuber on the subject of " Vetera I. The finds from the Roman camps on the Fürstenberg near Xanten ". In 1988 he worked as a research assistant at the Lisbon branch of the German Archaeological Institute, Madrid department . He then received a travel grant from the Roman-Germanic Commission of the German Archaeological Institute in 1988/89 . From 1990 to 1995 he was a research assistant at the State Office for Monument Preservation Hessen , Archaeological and Paleontological Monument Preservation, his workplace was the Darmstadt branch . From 1995 to 2006 Norbert Hanel carried out investigations into the fleet base Cologne-Marienburg (Alteburg) of the Classis Germanica as a research assistant at the Roman-Germanic Museum of the City of Cologne and at the Archaeological Institute, Archeology of the Roman Provinces, at the University of Cologne . He has been a guest lecturer at the Ruhr University in Bochum since 2003 . In the 2008/09 winter semester he was the professor for Roman Provincial Archeology at the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg , and in the 2015 summer semester and 2015/16 winter semester at the University of Cologne.
