Norbert Sedlacek (born January 27, 1962 in Vienna ) is an Austrian circumnavigator and author.

Life

Sedlacek comes from a family of civil servants in Vienna. After school, training as a waiter and completing his basic military service, he began a civil service career as a tram driver for the Wiener Stadtwerke-Verkehrsbetriebe . As a balance to his job, he ran Tae Kwon Do and was a member of the Austrian demonstration team and the Austrian national team. He also made his first experiences in sailing his boat Oasis I . Sedlacek is married and has one son.

In 1996 he gave up his civil service and went from July 28, 1996 to July 26, 1998 with his sailing boat Oase II on a circumnavigation of the world . The starting and destination port of the 26,000 nautical miles tour was Grado, Italy . He later described his experiences in the book In the Border Area of ​​the Possible . His next big trip was the Icelimit project , during which he was the first Austrian to circumnavigate the Antarctic non-stop with Oase III from November 30, 2000 to March 3, 2001 . The port of departure and destination for this trip was Cape Town , South Africa . On this voyage he covered 14,310 nautical miles.

Due to his participation in the regatta The Transat , he was approved for the one-handed regatta Vendée Globe in 2004. He took part in this from November 7th to December 19th, 2004 with the boat brother . Shortly before Cape Town he had to give up because of a break in the keel. Sedlacek published the experiences of this trip in the project Vendee Globe 2004/2005 .

Sedlacek started on November 9, 2008 with the Nauticsport Kapsch (formerly Austria One ) for the Vendée Globe 2008/2009 . On March 15, 2009, he reached the finish line in eleventh place, with 11 out of 30 participants still in the race.

In November 2013 Sedlacek attempted to cross the Atlantic with the 4.90 m long mini yacht Fipofix one-handed, non-stop and without outside help. The trip was supposed to test a new scrim made of volcanic fiber for its suitability for high-performance use. A return trip on the north route was planned. He started at Les Sables-d'Olonne but had to retire a few weeks later. The trip was successfully completed by his son Harald in Les Sables-d'Olonne.
