The Nord NC.850 (originally produced as Aérocentre NC.850) is a sport aircraft from the late 1940s produced by the French manufacturer Société Nationale de Constructions Aéronautiques du Center for the French aero clubs.

History and construction

The NC.850 series was developed from the Aérocentre NC.840 on the basis of a competition by the French government for a domestically built light sport aircraft for the French aero clubs . The development of the Aérocentre (SNCAC) was a clumsy high-wing aircraft with braced wings, a fully enclosed cabin and fixed tail wheel landing gear . The fuselage structure was tubular and the wings consisted of a metal structure and, like the entire aircraft, were covered with fabric.

The competition was won by SIPA S.90 , but the aero clubs still ordered 100 copies. This production was named NC.853 and differed from the prototypes by the double tail. After only 27 copies were produced, Aérocentre was liquidated and their assets were bought by Nord . The new owners continued production, now under the designation NC.853S.

In March 1951, a heavily modified version of this aircraft first flew as an observation aircraft for the French army . The NC.856 Norvegie had a more powerful engine and an extended and more extensive glazed cockpit. The army ordered 112 copies as artillery observation planes. A civilian version was also offered, but it was unsuccessful as only two copies could be sold. An airplane was equipped with floats and made a gift to King Norodom Sihanouk of Cambodia .
