Nordic Library at Athens

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Nordic Library at Athens ( Greek Βιβλιοθήκη των Βορείων Χωρών στην Αθήνα ) is one of several international archaeological libraries in Athens . It is supported by an association of the four Scandinavian institutes in Athens, the Svenska Institutet i Athens ( Sweden ), the Suomen Ateenan-instituutti ( Finland ), the Norske Institutt i Athens ( Norway ) and the Danske Institute i Athens ( Denmark ).

The institution, founded in 1996, is purely a reference library and comprises around 40,000 volumes, mainly covering the field of classical archeology in Greece as well as religion and history of ancient Greece . She collects around 450 magazines and other periodicals . The small collections of specialist literature available in the individual supporting institutes are made accessible from the Nordic Library catalog.

Modern archives

The library houses the archives of the Greek-American poet and art historian Nikos Kalamaris, known under the pseudonym Nikolas Kalas . The surrealist artist's archive was handed over in 1999 and includes letters, essays, articles and photographs as well as other material.

In 2005 the library received a gift from Finn Ståhl, a Swedish philhellenic and consul in Crete. It comprised about 250 works related to the Greek poet Konstantinos Kavafis , partly his volumes of poetry, partly literature on his work in Greek and other languages.

The archive materials are made accessible through catalogs and are accessible to interested scientists.
