Norham

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Norham is a place in Northumberland , England , on the south bank of the Tweed and the border with Scotland .

The 12th century Norham Castle has long been the center of Norhamshire , an exclave of County Durham that became part of Northumberland in 1844 .

In 1292 the English King Edward I met the Scottish nobility here to determine the future King of Scotland.

Walter Scott's poem Marmion , which deals with the Battle of Flodden Field (1513), begins with the verses:

Day set on Norham's castled steep,
And Tweed's fair river, broad and deep,
And Cheviot's mountains lone:
The battled towers, the donjon keep,
The loophole grates where captives weep,
The flanking walls that round it sweep,
In yellow luster shone.

The painter William Turner's picture of Norham Castle hangs in the Tate Gallery of British Art and is one of the gallery's most valuable works.
